Barrett's Oesophagus

Exam Cram

• Oesophageal epithelial lining is normally squamous, stomach is columnar

• In Barrett's oesophagus, the oesophageal lining changes into columnar due to damage from the stomach's acid

• Barret's oesophagus is dysplasia (pre-cancerous) and is associated with oesophageal adenocarcinoma

• Management: repeat endoscopy in 6m with PPI cover, if persists: radiofrequency ablation

Management

Low grade dysplasia 

1. x2 endoscopies 6 months apart for diagnosis

2. Offer radiofrequency ablation 

3. Alternatively 6 month suivellance

High grade dysplasia

1. Radiofrequency ablation
