CMV (Cytomegalovirus)

• Cytomegalovirus is part of the herpes simplex virus family (HSV-5)

• Affects Immunocompromised:

  • • Renal transplant

    • Old, young; those with BBV

• Management: 

  • • Mild: PO valganciclovir 

    • Severe: IV Ganciclovir

CMV Location

Acute Hepatitis

• This is a viral hepatitis but not referred to as a 'viral hepatitis A-E'

• Diagnosis: CMV serology PCR + deranged LFTs

Proctitis: 

• Rectal bleeding- transmitted via anal intercourse

Oesphagitis

• Associated with immunocompromise, HIV 

• Presentation: indigestion, endoscopy- ulcerated lesions, histology- basophilic inclusions

• Management: Ganciclovir 2-3 infusion
