Exam Cram

• Moa: caused by a self replication protein (prion) in the brain

• Presentation:  rapid (i.e. four week) cognitive decline, myoclonic & dystonic movements

• Investigation: 

  • • MRI-H

    • EEG shows periodic spikes and delta slowing

• New variant vs sporadic variant:

  • • New: changes in thalamus & under 50yrs old

    • Sporadic: changes in caudate & putamen & over 50yrs 

• Management: nil
