Lead Poisoning

Exam Cram

• Presentation: lethargy, constipation, headaches ; distal motor/ sensory neuropathy

• Investigations: sideroblastic microcytic anaemia 

• Occupational exposure, i.e. lead based paint, old building demolition

• Management: chelation therapy, DMSA & penicillin

• Basophilic stippling of RBC on peripheral blood film

• Sources of lead exposure

  • Occupational: miners, welders, storage battery workers, pottery workers

  • Environmental

• Can cause interstitial nephritis
