Hypomagnesaemia is a biochemical sign where serum Magnesium is below 0.7
Presentation: tremor, Atrial Fibrillation and tetany
Classification: mild 0.3-0.7, severe < 0.3
Management: magnesium replacement IV or PO, check other electrolytes
History
Examination
Investigations
ECG: long QT
Associated with HypoKalaemia
Diagnostic criteria: serum magnesium < 0.7
PO replacement
Mild (0.3-0.7)
Side effects: diarrheoa, so can be poorly tolerated
IV Replacement
Severe < 0.3
Unwell/ poor swallow/ current diarrhoea
Management
If the patient has IV access, I'd have a low threshold for giving Magnesium IV as replacement PO can cause diarrhoea, worsening electrolyte losses.
