Haemolysis
Alpha haemolysis
Beta haemolysis
Alpha Haemolysis
Examples
Streph pneumonia
Tend to be less aggressive than beta group and more resistant to antibiotics
Beta Haemolysis
More aggressive than alpha group but more susceptible to antibiotics
Streph antigen
A- streph pyogenes, GAS (group A streph)
B- streph agalactiae- GBS, neonata meningitis, 'baby streph'
C, D, E... etc
Gamma Haemolysis
These organisms show no haemolysis, so aren't really strephlococci
Examples: enterococcus, staphlococcus epidermis
Enterococcus (found in bowel) has been re-classified into its own subset, distinct from strephtococcus
Streph Pyogenes (GAS)
Streph Agalactiae (GBS)
Other Streph
Streph aginosus
